个人简介

我出生于英格兰东北部海边的小镇——斯卡波罗（Scarborough）。先后在赫尔大学和杜伦大学修习哲学，分别获本科学位，以及硕博学位。工作之余，我对体育也十分感兴趣，特别是足球、搏击、赛车运动，和高尔夫球。

研究方向

我的研究是跨学科的，含括了语言哲学、理论语言学和精神病学。最主要的研究重点是关于从句法理论的现代发展分析语言哲学中的经典问题，这需要考察（哲学传统中的）语义和（传统的生成语法中的）句法互动中产生的问题。我利用当前的理论语言学，针对古典语言哲学中具历史意义的一系列问题进行探讨。这些问题包括了有定描述语（罗素，1905），指示代词（卡普兰，1970；1989），和专有名词（克里普克，1980）。此外，我对语言作为人类思维起源的解释项的作用也十分感兴趣。我相信自然语言是人类“生物天赋”（可参见乔姆斯基，2000，81）的一部分，并且语义当中包含的哲学问题作为“生物语言学”的分支，广义上来说是将语言作为“自然对象”来展开的研究（简金斯，1999；乔姆斯基，2004，106；2005，2）。最后，在过去的两年间，我愈发关注语言的现象学，即语言失调，特别是进行性失语症的病人使用的语言。

教学专业

我教授并创建了逻辑、伦理学、思想哲学、语义学和语用学、应用语言学（硕士水平课程）和研究报告写作课程。我目前教授一门关于“心智”的跨学科课程，涵盖心理学、哲学、神经科学和精神病学的各种主题，以及一门关于辩论和辩论技巧的课程。
